Sikorsky and Robinson have unveiled the R66 Turbinetruck, a new autonomous cargo helicopter based on the popular Robinson R66 and adapted to fly without a pilot on board.
Autonomous control is provided by Sikorsky’s MATRIX system. Using cameras, sensors and advanced algorithms, the helicopter can plan and execute assigned missions. An operator enters the mission goal using a tablet, after which the system manages the flight.
The R66 Turbinetruck is intended for both military and civil applications. Potential missions include cargo and supply delivery, logistical support and disaster-relief operations.
The helicopter features a cargo compartment and nose-mounted doors designed to make loading and unloading faster. It is the 21st aircraft to use MATRIX, a system that has already accumulated more than 1,000 hours of operational flight data.
The manufacturers have not yet announced a certification schedule or a date for regular operations. They emphasise, however, that the platform is intended to remain relatively affordable and easy to adapt to different missions.
